A HISTORY OF ST. PATRICK’S DAY

St. Patrick’s Day has become known as a holiday for wearing green, pinching those who do not wear green, eating green foods, and drinking green beer. But the history of the day is much more complex than just an association with the color green, shamrocks, and leprechauns. St. Patrick’s Day is a celebration of the foremost patron saint of Ireland, and originated in the Catholic Church. Traditionally the day is one of celebration of the life of St. Patrick, and is day of feasting. The image of the shamrock is part of the holiday because St. Patrick is said to have used the shamrock as a symbol of the Holy Trinity, and given shamrocks are green in color these two traditions have stood the test of time. Green is also the color most associated with Catholics in Ireland, and that tradition carries on today in the “wearing of the green”. Whatever your religious beliefs, St. Patrick’s Day is a fun holiday and a great time to get together with friends and family for fellowship and fun.
