CAN THE COURT SILENCE VICTIMS OF ABUSE?

The charges against USA Gymnastics Team Doctor Larry Nassar have finally come to an end. Nassar was not only the team doctor for Team USA, but also provided medical services to Michigan State University. Nassar was sentenced to what will basically amount to a life sentence for his repeated and historied abuse of athletes, and some of those athletes were interested in reading statements in Court at sentencing. However, not everyone was allowed to speak up, and some of the more well-known gymnasts were even threatened with lawsuits if they spoke out against Nassar. Aly Raisman was prevented from speaking at Nassar’s pornography case sentencing, but that is to be expected given her statements were relevant to the abuse case and not the pornography charges. McKayla Maroney was initially prohibited from speaking, or told she would be fined. But that was the result of a confidential settlement agreement she reached in a separate case. That ban was ultimately lifted.
