COMMUNITY SHOWS SUPPORT FOR OKLAHOMA TEACHERS

In the very near future we will all know whether our children will go to school and continue learning, or whether schools will close in the wake of a massive teacher walk out. Fears about continued nutritional and daycare needs have surfaced as families try to plan for a potential walk out, not to mention what Oklahomans will need to do to rearrange summer schedules in the event a walk out lasts for any length of time. In a show of teacher support, a group of educators are putting together their own plan to fund the demands of the teachers. The Professional Educators of Norman, an affiliate of the Oklahoma Education Association, has proposed an increase to the gross production tax, elimination of the capital gains tax exemption, increasing taxes on cigarettes, and other measures the group claims will provide the revenue needed to meet the teachers’ demands. We all anxiously await how the state legislature will respond to this problem.
