FELONY CHARGES RISE THE LAST HALF OF LAST YEAR

Last year the State Legislature made certain changes to the criminal code, making some drug charges a misdemeanor rather than a felony. One of the reasons for the changes was to reduce the number of felony convictions, which usually require jail time. The expected decrease in felony cases was intended to help with prison overcrowding. However, in some parts of the state the changes have not had the desired result. In fact, felony charges increased in some parts of the state, where prosecutors opted to charge defendants with distribution charges instead of misdemeanor possession.
