HOW SOCIAL IS SOCIAL MEDIA?

Social media sites are a great place to update your status and post photos of your pets and family. With friends and family members scattered across the country, being able to log on to Facebook or Instagram and see how an old high school friend is doing is nice, but it is also causing a breakdown in personal relationships. Social media has allowed for easy sharing of photos and important life event information, but some argue it prevents people from truly forming a personal bond. The concern is most noticeable with middle and high school aged students, who may spend more time making online friends, just for the sake of having a large number of followers, than they do actually taking to one another at the local high school football game or across the lunchroom table. Some local schools have instituted a “no phone” policy during school hours and perhaps we can all take a cue from this action and put our phones down and engage in live conversation with our friends and family.
