LEGAL TIP OF THE WEEK: WHY INCARCERATION DOESN’T ALWAYS SOLVE THE PROBLEM

Many Oklahoma County inmates suffer from more than just having been convicted of a crime. A good percentage of the inmate population suffers from a mental illness or drug addiction, and treatment while behind bars can be lacking. What is really needed, and what could really help lead to true rehabilitation is programs that address the addiction and mental illness issues. One way to do this is to decline to jail low level offenders, and instead offer programs that help them beat their addiction or get the help they need for a mental illness. If illness or addiction is the root of the problem that caused the criminal behavior, the best solution might be to treat those symptoms rather than put people behind bars.
