OKLAHOMA IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Last month a local nonprofit, ReMerge, was featured on CNN. In an episode of “This is Life with Lisa Ling”, the methamphetamine problem in Oklahoma was in the national spotlight. While leaving out information on why Oklahomans so quickly turn to meth, the program highlighted what addicts can do to get help. One option is through the ReMerge program. It is also worth mentioning that these issues are under heavy scrutiny as the criminal justice system undergoes reform, most notably with downgrading some drug cases from felonies to misdemeanors. One school of thought is that by allowing nonviolent offenders to serve their sentence outside the jailhouse, entry into helpful mental and substance abuse programs will begin to decrease addiction. Not everyone is a believer that this will work, and it is still too early to call.
