POSITIVE MOVEMENT ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM

The Oklahoma Legislature recently passed several bills impacting the criminal justice system. This movement is a big change to what those pushing for reform have wanted, because this is the first significant step towards new laws in a while. Last year there were five bills that were bogged down in committee, by Republican lawmakers. But now it appears as though the GOP is somewhat on board with requests, giving real reform a real shot! Some of the things up for consideration include downgrading punishment for lower level crimes, with the goal to ease the burden on the State’s overpopulated prisons.
