TALKING TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT SCHOOL SHOOTINGS

The shooting on Valentine’s Day at a Florida school is reportedly the 49th mass shooting since the start of 2018. Given we are just a month and a half into the year, this number is alarmingly high. Even one shooting is one too many, but with world events as they are, it is more important now than it ever has been in the past to talk to your kids about these incidents. Experts advise keeping the conversation to a zero if you are not directly impacted and your kids are under the age of 8. But for older kids, a conversation needs to be had. Before going in though, be sure to keep your emotions out of the talk so your kids are more receptive to what you are trying to convey. And keep in mind the ages of your children, and keep the talk short if your kids are younger. For older children, it is a good idea to get their feedback and listen to their concerns about these events. The more our kids feel as though they are being heard, the more likely they are to listen and implement rules or changes in the family home. It is also a sign of respect, and even kids can tell when they are being disrespected. If your child is having an especially hard time processing things like school shootings, enlist the help of a professional. Finally, always keep the lines of communication open and give your children your undivided attention when tackling serious issues.
