WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF OKC GETTING A NEW JAIL?

The OKC jail was a state of the art facility when it was built, and it was thought to be “escape proof”. But not long after the jail opened and inmates began filling the beds, escape attempts were made and some were successful. Since that time the jail has been a constant source of debate, mostly about what types of renovations are needed and how the cost of repairs will be covered. These concerns have been around for the past 27 years, and may be brought up again with the election of a new County Commissioner. The goal is to make the jail safe, reduce violence inside the facility, and eliminate break outs. But, because any funding for these things would likely come from property taxes, the taxpayers are the ones who would have the final say.
