WHY DO WE NEED CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM IN OKLAHOMA?

Oklahoma has one of the highest rates of incarceration. What this means is that more people are put behind bars in Oklahoma than in nearly every other state in the country. When facilities are at capacity, adding new prisoners puts a strain on an already strained system. In order to alleviate the stress, reform of the laws that puts people behind bars is necessary. Lowering the incarceration rate and offering programs to rehabilitate will not only decrease the overcrowded prison population but will also give a boost to the state’s economy. Businesses, and the jobs they create, are attracted to areas with a strong infrastructure and that includes the legal system and how it works for the people of the community. Some ideas under consideration are reclassifying certain crimes and having more oversight in the criminal justice reform process.
