KEEP TO THE RIGHT, OR GET TICKETED

Come this November if you like to “sit” in the left lane while driving, be prepared for the possibility of getting a ticket. A new restriction will go into effect in November, prohibiting drivers from using the left lane on a divided highway, unless they are passing a vehicle on the right. As the law stands currently, you may drive in the left hand lane as long as you are not impeding the flow of traffic. But that will all change this fall and the news has a lot of people wondering how an officer will be able to determine if you are passing, or moving over to allow room for a vehicle on the right to stop safely (which is also currently allowed). The goal of this new legislation is to have safer highways, and many of our surrounding states have laws like this in effect currently. However, this new law does not mean you may use the left lane to pass at a high rate of speed, and following the speed limit and other rules of the road are still expected.
