CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM PASSES STATE HOUSE AND SENATE

The State Legislature recently passed a new measure designed to keep non-violent criminal offenders out of jail. Crimes such as larceny and forgery should no longer land you behind bars, and this includes things like writing a hot check. Another component to the new measures allows for more lenient parole guidelines for non-violent offenders. For those currently serving time that do not pose a threat, including older inmates, will be considered for release earlier. The efforts are aimed at reducing the population of prisons that are already busting at the seams, and easing the burden on the State and taxpayers caused by the overcrowded prison situation.
