OKLAHOMA NEEDS MORE PRISON SPACE

Prison overcrowding is not an issue that will be fixed overnight. Most jails and prisons in Oklahoma are at or over capacity, are facing staffing shortages, or are in need of repairs and upgrades. In many cases, a facility faces all of these problems at once. And, even with strides being made in criminal justice reform aimed at keeping people out of jail, there is still a great need for updated or new facilities. The condition of many of our state’s jails is in need of repair by way of updated sewage, water, and gas lines. In some facilities, repairs need to be made to the cells themselves, starting with fixing faulty cell door locks. The State Board of Corrections will likely use bond money for these initiatives, and having upgrades will help increase safety and security for everyone.
