WHAT ARE THE RULES FOR FREQUENT FLYING?

Many airlines and even some credit cards offer great rewards and perks for frequent flyers. But many of these programs also raise a lot of questions. For instance, can an employee use miles earned on a business trip for personal use? And what about checking bags? Can your boss make you carry on to avoid a checked bag fee? For the first, the rule is that miles you earn while working belong to your boss. But that is not to say your employer may not allow you to use miles for personal use. When it comes to checking bags, your workplace is not required to pay to check your suitcase. This might sound unfair, but you may be able to recoup the cost as an unreimbursed business expense. Talk to a CPA to find out more, and be sure to keep records of all of your expenses any time you travel for work. This will help your accountant determine if you are allowed to make any claims, and if so, in what amount.
